What is the best way to treat leather couches?

I'm about to buy a $3,000 leather couch set but am wondering if it is really worth it to pay them to do the initial leather treatment. I know I'll need to do that every 6-12 months so I'm wondering if it's really worth it to pay them for the first one or if I could do it myself fairly easily and save lots of money in the process? If so, what product should I use...anything special?
